Learning Goal:  I can use my strengths as a communicator to deliver an intentional message.

Day one Learning Target:  I can craft or articulate a message.

Day two Learning Target:  I can analyze a text with the intention of performing.

Day three Learning Target:  I can provide and utilize meaningful feedback.

How can I use my voice to deliver a strong message?

Students will select or prepare material to present to the class that has a message you feel is valuable.  This presentation can be:

  • A song

  • A poem

  • A story

  • A speech

  • Stand-up Comedy

  • Whatever you’d like

The aim is to share a 3-5 minute presentation that is well prepared, and rehearsed.  This does not mean it must be memorized.  Actors may use a script or note card for reference.  This may also be done solo or with a group.

You will be assessed on the following scales:

  • Physical Expression A

  • Vocal Expression A and B

  • Theatrical Process A, B, and C

  • Professionalism A and B

As part of the process grade, students will keep a process journal using the following prompts:

Day 1:  What material did you choose to perform and why do you feel this material is important to present to an audience?  What do you want your audience to think, feel, or understand after seeing your performance?

Day 2:  Describe the process of preparing your material.  What did you do to ensure your preparedness?

Day 3:  As you give your peers feedback, what are common strengths and areas for growth you observed?  Do any of these apply to you and what will you do to highlight your strengths and grow in your weaknesses?

Day 4:  After your performance, how do you feel in your ability to convey a message?  What does it take to be a clear and effective communicator?

Due:  Tuesday, November 20th

Preparing my Performance

Your goal is to speak to deliver a clear message.  As you prepare, you will need to analyze your text, practice your vocal delivery, and plan for movement.  Please follow the steps below:

1.  As you read your text, underline or highlight the most important words or phrases.  These are the words and phrases you want to emphasize as you speak.  How will you adjust your volume, pitch, or rate to draw in your audience?

2.  Practice!  Read it out loud.  Decide, is this message best presented read or memorized?  Do what is best for the performance.  Regardless of whether you will read or memorize, you need to be familiar with your presentation.  Our goal is fluidity and clear delivery of your message.

3.  Plan for movement.  Where will gesture or movement aid the delivery of your message.  Plan it, practice it, perform it consistently.

4.  Practice, practice, practice.  You will perform the way you practice, so practice well and fully.  Speak the way you will speak.  Stand the way you will stand.  Move the way you will move.

Giving Feedback

Each of you will watch at least 3 other student performances and provide meaningful feedback with the intention of preparing your partner for their performance.  You may comment on:

Vocal Expression and Variation: Does the speaker project the message appropriately and with meaning.

Physicallity:  Does the speaker use their body to convey the message?

Energy and Intent:  Does the speaker perform in a way that engages the audience?
